It features a pale blue coloring on the sides of its body and contrasting patterns on its pectoral and caudal fins, and its coloring becomes even more striking as it grows. Despite its subdued body coloring, it makes a striking presence when it spreads its fins.
While this species is relatively hardy and easy to care for, it is carnivorous and territorial, so it is best kept alone or with fish of the same size or larger. Many individuals easily adapt to artificial or frozen food. Due to its strong jumping ability, a lid is essential.
